Lead abatement and removal
According to the EPA, if your home or office was built before 1978, there’s a significant chance it contains lead-based paint. Prior to the 1970s, lead was used in a wide array of products due to its malleability and resistance to corrosion. Consequently, lead was common in construction and can still be found in water pipes, paint, toys, cosmetics, and more.
Because lead was so widely used, it remains a substantial health risk today. We now know lead causes serious health issues, especially for children. In adults, high lead levels can result in high blood pressure, muscle and joint pain, abdominal pain, headaches, and fertility issues. In children, elevated lead exposure can cause developmental delays, weight loss, irritability, hearing loss, and seizures.
The EPA emphasizes that lead paint is still present in millions of homes, often hidden beneath newer layers of paint. Intact lead paint isn’t typically an issue, but deteriorating lead-based paint—peeling, chipping, or damp—poses immediate hazards. It’s especially risky on surfaces children can chew or areas that see heavy wear: windows, sills, doors, frames, stairs, railings, and porches. Keeping paint in excellent condition and cleaning dust often is critical.
Lead dust can come from deteriorating paint indoors or be tracked inside from contaminated soil—whether from old exterior paint, industrial pollution, or past leaded gasoline use. Renovation or repair work can create toxic lead dust when surfaces are disturbed.
Lead was also used in water service lines and household plumbing until 1986. As water flows through lead pipes or solder, lead can leach into the drinking supply.
Because of the risk lead poses to public health, it’s essential that only licensed, highly trained professionals handle it.
